Different types of cancers have been one of the leading causes of death in the world. In fact, 5% of the world’s populace suffer from cancers and the mortality rate is pretty high as well.

Although there are plenty of ways you can cure cancer such as undergoing plenty of chemotherapy sessions, the procedure, per se, is quite damaging to the other cells of your body.

The reason for such a procedure is to kill cancer-causing cells or cells that have been mired with the dreaded disease. However, it is not so forgiving in that your other cells can also get damaged all throughout the therapy as well. That is why the patient experiences hair loss at a dramatic rate as well as being nauseous and vomiting, to name a few.

However, there is a new line of treatment that is way better than the conventional radiation chemotherapy procedures.

Bone Marrow Stem cell transplants have been one of the leading medical procedures

in the treatment of different cancers. The idea is to extract the stem cells from a human body to be transplanted back to the patient who has suffered the dreaded disease.

The cells can either be Allogenic or ones that were extracted from a family member (who is compatible) and it can also be Autologous which are stem cells that were extracted directly from the patient themselves.

Why is the Bone Marrow So Important?

As you probably know already from grade school biology, bone marrow is that soft tissue that is embedded in the center of your skeletal system. It is the site where your main blood cells are produced- this being the red and white blood cells as well as the platelet that help aid in blood clotting.

The stem cells that you want are predominantly food in the person’s bone marrow and in the bloodstream as well. They first form multiple immature blood cells and once they mature, they enter the marrow and is then distributed to the different parts of the body.

Why Chemotherapy is Dangerous

The reason why chemotherapy has been the de facto procedure in the treatment of cancer is that it kills those cancer-causing cells pretty rapidly. But, this is done at the expense of your other body parts, this, including the bone marrow.

So, How Does Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Come into Play?
Because of the chemotherapy’s harmful effects to the patient’s body, autologous bone marrow extraction is out of the equation.

So, the best possible track is to extract the stem cells from another person- may it be from the patient’s direct family or someone who is compatible with them.

Once a donor is found, the patient undergoes a few rounds of chemotherapy (yes, I know, this procedure is important). After which, the body will then be susceptible to foreign matter, which is why transplanting the new stem cells are going to be more effective in fighting the cancer cells by then.

Although I mentioned that this procedure is better than conventional chemotherapy methods, chemotherapy is also needed just to prime the body to accept the transplanted cells better.

That being said, there are also some cases where the new cells are deemed as “foreign” and might be attacked by the person’s own immune system. Therefore, it is important that the transplanted cells come from a person who is completely compatible with the patient.
